Not the most ideal sunset view, but this is what we get lately being in Jakarta. Sadly, 9 out of 10 children worldwide do not breathe safe air - which includes Jakarta given the recent pollution situation. We support IBUKOTA movement by addressing this recommendation the honorable Governor of DKI Jakarta: to make a strategy and action plan for Air Pollution in Jakarta.
.
.

The leading cause of death is Ischemic heart disease, in which arteries cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart.
We are supporting the IBUKOTA Coalition and @akudanpolusi by @greenpeaceid who have drafted several recommendations for the Government and we support these as residents of #Jakarta city. Everyday this week we will post several recommendations for various leaders and ministries. We start Monday with the first recommendation to the President @jokowi which is to revise Governmental Regulation 41/1999 about Air Pollution Control —

After discussing and consulting with some medical experts about the Coronavirus outbreak and taking into account the government’s decision to shut down all schools in Jakarta, we have decided to postpone the upcoming EEE events.
EEE is a type of gathering between kids and volunteers, and these days we need to ensure the health of both parties - kids (including their families) and us as the volunteers.
We hope for the health and safety for all of us, our families, and our community. We are sure that the spirit of teaching and caring for others will still live on as we go through these challenging times together. Stay safe and sound in your homes ❤Last Saturday, 7th March, the #EnvironmentalEducationEvent team was at the RPTRA Akasia to educate local children on the environment. @prachigarg1010 shared with us about her experience as a volunteer for the event.
“Firstly, I was quite impressed to see that the event was held at a RPTRA, which is a "Child Friendly Integrated Public Space". There are around 290 such open green public spaces in Jakarta! RPTRA AKASIA, just like others, is also well equipped with facilities like a library, a classroom, lactation room, hydroponic plantation and ample play areas.
Secondly, I was so happy to see this educational initiative started by Irka, supported by Erou & Ester that focuses on teaching the local children about various environmental issues.
This time the children were taught about the Climate Crisis and simple ways to reduce carbon emissions. This was taught in a fun engaging way through a beautiful story, songs, games and a drawing activity. At the end all the children were given a reusable bag, milk and some snacks. They also took back home what they drew (one of the ways to reduce emissions) and will able to show it to their parents.
Overall, it was a great experience and I feel fortunate to be a part of this program! Educating them today about these issues can make them better future leaders, decision makers and good citizens!” #environmentaleducation #environmentaleducationforkids #anakanakubahiklim #environmentaleducationjakartaYesterday, @annisaerou represented the #EnvironmentalEducationEvent (EEE) team of @goinggreeninjakarta by attending the Focus Group Discussion titled “Early Education for Children on Plastic Waste Problem” held by @greenpeaceid.
This FGD gathered practitioners in education field who are engaging directly with elementary school students - participants included teachers, storytellers, volunteers, NGOs, and community leaders. The FGD covered the basics of the plastic waste problem, the do’s and don’ts of effective environmental teaching, targeted messaging to different types of students, and advice on the campaign itself.
Example: Adi is a 9 year-old boy who’s an extrovert and really likes to mingle with his friends. He will do whatever their squad does. The most important things in his life are just playing and watching Youtube videos. His life quote is “Ga ngumpul, gak kuy!” (not hanging out, not cool!). And one of some messages we want to deliver to him is: gak peduli lingkungan, gak kuy! (not loving the environment, not cool!).
Our advice to deliver an effective campaign for students like Adi includes: holding an “Amazing Race” or treasure hunt with several stations for different types of activities. Activities can range from storytelling and watching a video, waste separation, playing snake and ladder, to making some creation and expression sessions (singing, dancing, making a flash-mob).
Emission information coming from immovable sources, such as industries and power plants, hasn’t been disseminated by the government yet so that it cannot be accessed by the people. Whereas this is the right of the people so that we can prepare ourselves when an environmental crisis happens. Come on, Pak @aniesbaswedan, open the emissions data!
You can help by mentioning Pak @aniesbaswedan @DKIJakarta to open the emissions data!

Song credits: ‘Soft Serve’ by Rook1eOn February 22nd, our volunteers were at the RPTRA Pintu Air for another #EnvironmentalEducationEvent (EEE). @ratikashahsingh, one of our volunteers, told us a few words about the event:
“Through a series of interactive activities like story-telling, singing, dancing, games and a drawing competition we tried to share information about Climate Change, what it is, how it impacts us, and what we as individuals can do to reduce it. From a mere trickle at the beginning, the number of children swelled to forty by half-time, and we had to come up with ingenious ways of distributing snacks and giveaways (we usually plan for thirty children attending).
Take a look at the photos and I am sure you will see the curiosity, enthusiasm, the will to make a change and most importantly, to have fun while doing it, seep through. We all learnt something new that day, about Climate Change, about ourselves. We all became children, with the children for those two hours.”
Thanks so much for the good work guys! Keep inspiring children and other volunteers to take actions to protect our planet.
If you would like to become a volunteer at upcoming EEE events, please feel free to reach out to @annisaerou or @ester_fonpat. You don't need to be fluent in Bahasa, any kind of help is welcome!
#AnakAnakUbahIklimLast Thursday our volunteers @prachigarg1010, @conscientiouslyliving and @notjclntn were invited by the @Springfield.School to teach grade 1-3 students about pollution in Jakarta and what they can do to fight it.
The students were so enthusiastic and showed great interest in keeping our planet clean. Every time the volunteers asked a question, most of them raised their hands and answered the questions. Congratulations to the Springfield School that has been teaching their classes about pollution since January!
After the presentation, the kids gathered with their classmates and the homeroom teacher to segregate trash and put it on a board that we prepared. The board will then be placed in their classroom to remind them of what they learned.
Thank you to the Springfield School, @novinachristie and @angelarren for the opportunity! Our volunteers had such an amazing experience. Seeing how enthusiastic and caring these children are gives us hope for the future. Our volunteers also taught the students to tell their parents to reduce their plastics usage. Hopefully what they teach the children will also impact their parents!‘Sedia payung sebelum hujan’ was the message carried on the umbrellas by the group of environmental activists that marched last Sunday during Car Free Day in Jakarta.
They got together to demand our political leaders to declare climate emergency and to take actions to decelerate the climate crisis that is already happening all over the world.
28 countries have already made a climate emergency declaration. If you believe that Indonesia should declare climate emergency, join the next #climatestrike that will happen in April! ✨✊🏽 #jedauntukiklim

#JedauntukIklimThis past Saturday a group of volunteers was at the RPTRA Borobudur for another #EnvironmentalEducationEvent. The group spoke to local children about climate change.
The climate crisis can be quite a heavy topic for children, so our volunteers had to create an approach to get kids involved in a positive way. They address the topic through activities that children can relate to.
The children learn a story about how the Earth is sick and what they can do to become green heroes and help her recover. They play games where they need to think and make decisions to reduce greenhouse gases emissions. They learn songs about saving energy, saving fuel, helping to plant trees, not wasting food, and reusing what they already have at home.
Those are baby steps, but we believe that “if many little people in many little places do many little things, they can change the face of the Earth”. What many little things are you doing to contribute?
#AnakAnakUbahIklimDid you know that Indonesian consumers are increasingly aware of their impact on the environment?
According to a new report, Indonesians are starting to make purchasing decisions that are driven by our desire to live an eco-friendly life. For many consumers, it is important to find products and services that have a low impact on the environment.
Our Google searches from last year show that “sedotan stainless” had 3x increase, especially in Yogyakarta and East Kalimantan.
“Tas daur ulang” had 6.3x jump in searches. While queries for “electric car” had a 2.7x rise. The searches are not just concentrated around Jakarta but also coming from regions like North Sumatra.
“Kualitas udara” had 3.9x growth in searches, with most search per capita coming from West Kalimantan, Riau and Jakarta.

Q&A time!
Stay safe, teman-teman!

Since August, a team of educators from GGIJ have been using those spaces once a month to hold the Environmental Education Event (EEE), an event to raise awareness amongst local children about our impacts on the environment.
Those photos were taken during the first event at the RPTRA Cililitan. The local children learned about the plastic pollution and many small but impactful actions that they can take to fight it. We would like to thank all who contribute with their time or with donations for the event to happen.
In the next three posts, we will share more about how EEE works and how you can be part of this education team and contribute to the events to keep them growing and impacting more children.

#EnvironmentalEducationEvent #AnakAnakUbahIklim #EEEIn the last month, two of our members, @annisaerou and @ester_fonpat, represented Going Green in Jakarta at @JakartaInterculturalSchool to celebrate the UN Day 2019. The school celebration included a show of cultural performances, a food fair with cuisines from all over the world, and several workshops.
In their workshop, they launched the Youth Leadership (YOL), a program with the mission to empower a new generation of youth who are interested to learn how to make positive changes in order to live a greener life and to become leaders and influencers who can effectively advocate for sustainability on local as well as global scales.
Education is the most fundamental and influential way to achieve a better, more equitable, and more sustainable world. That’s why we would like to express our gratitude to Emily and the Jakarta Intercultural School for the trust in our work and for the opportunity of educating their students on the environment 🌏🌿Last Friday hundreds of people in Indonesia got together to demand that global leaders take action to combate the climate crisis. @JedaUntukIklim (#ClimateStrike) is a wake-up call to our own generation. Let’s raise our voices together! 🌏✊🏽✊🏼✊🏾✨ #JedaUntukIklim

#goinggreeninjakarta #zerowastejakarta #zerowasteindonesia #bulkshopjakarta Do you know what a bulk shop is? It is a place where shoppers can buy products by the weight rather than by individual packages. Besides being a more sustainable alternative to items that often come in single-use plastic packaging, it also:
💰 Often helps you saving money in the long run
🌱 Most of their products are healthy, chemical free, natural, organic and homemade!
At a bulk shop you can find products from spices, grains, pasta, dried fruits and nuts, to home cleaner products as well as toiletries - all without and/or with the minimum amount of packaging.
Where can you find bulk shops in Jakarta? There are around 4 zero waste bulk stores in our city.

Our IG account has been rather quiet over the last two weeks, but our members have been very active during November. In the beginning of the month our speaker @malinisailin spoke about plastic pollution and the 5Rs to reduce our waste at the One Small Step Going Green Talk Show. We want to thank Wu Hub coworking space for the great opportunity to share about living a greener life and also thank @conscientiouslyliving and @prachigarg1010 for their support 🙏
If you are interested in learning and sharing more about how to go green in Jakarta, join our FB page (Facebook.com/GGJakarta) and be part of our community!
➡️ According to WWF, food waste is not just a social or humanitarian concern, it’s also an environmental one. When we waste food, we also waste energy, water that it takes to grow, harvest, transport and package it. Besides all the methane being produced if the food goes to the landfill.
In order to avoid food waste, donate your waste to @FoodCycleIndonesia. They re-distribute untouched surplus food, re-process imperfect produces and re-cycle food waste.
Let’s help the less privileged communities and fight climate change together!

#jedauntukiklim #climatestrike #krisisiklim #climatecrisis #indonesiaLate post but full of gratitude to @HappyFresh_ID, who gave @GoingGreeninJakarta the opportunity to present solutions related to plastic reduction in their training for HappyFresh employees who do grocery shopping on behalf of their costumers.
The training was held from the beginning to the end of August and was co-presented by our members @malinisailin, @annisaerou, @ester_fonpat and Nando from @KDMgreenproject.
We introduced them to our community, to the danger of plastic overuse and also how the shoppers and other HappyFresh staff could reduce their plastic intake when buying and delivering products to their customers.
We want to thank HappyFresh for the opportunity, especially to Filippo, Julian, Hendry and Rio. It was so fun to collaborate with your team! What if we told you that by COMPOSTING waste you could help improving the overall air quality of Jakarta, would you do that?
According to CNN, composting your waste would be similar to taking 16 MILLION cars off the road! 🚗🚕🚙🚗
It helps to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions, which impact the environment and the health of millions of people.
In addition to that, compost replenishes exhausted farm soils, reduces soil erosion and prevents storm water runoff.
Composting is also an alternative for burning waste. And the good news is that Composting systems are readily available, cost-effective and easy to do from your home!
So, let's start composting! We are sharing with you a basic guideline on how to start composting in INDOORS 🐛🌱🌱🍃
Yuk, kita buat kompos sendiri!

Video reposted from @climaterangersDid you know??
Jakarta’s Bantar Gebang is the largest uncovered landfill in SE Asia! Landfills cause early deaths and respiratory diseases. They also pollute the soil, water and air.
Approx. 18,000 families live around the 200 acres of the Bantar Gebang site – more than 6,000 of them work as trash pickers.
💡What can Jakarta residents do to reduce pollution from landfill?
⬇ REDUCE the waste we create, especially food waste from our homes and work spaces.
❌REFUSE and avoid single use plastics and Styrofoam packaging. Do you really need it?
🔄 REUSE and UPCYCLE the everyday items as much as possible.
♻ Segregate your waste and RECYCLE Paper, Plastic, Metal & Glass. (find out who to give it to on our website https://goinggreeninjakarta.org/recycling/)
Tahukah kamu??
Apakah Anda benar-benar membutuhkannya?

Burning trash is dangerous to human health and contaminates the air, water, and soil. According to @greenpeaceid, burning waste contributes for 17% of Jakarta’s air pollution.
It is not only a bad idea. It is against the law! According to the Perda DKI No. 3 of 2013 in conjunction with Law No. 32 of 2009, every person who burns waste and pollutes the environment is threatened with a maximum PRISON SENTENCE of ONE YEAR or a maximum FINE of 500 MILLION RUPIAH.

https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/air/trash.htmToday’s (90 AQI) and yesterday’s (68 AQI) readings are the lowest air pollution levels we’ve seen in weeks... Could there be a correlation with the power outages in the last two days?
We can’t affirm, but we all know that Jakarta needs to move towards cleaner energy sources 💡💪
You can also check: https://en.tempo.co/read/1232196/jakarta-air-quality-improves-post-java-power-outageDid you know that, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia generates its power largely from the fossil fuels (87.85%) like Coal, Gas & Oil, whereas only 12.15% is being used from Renewable sources?
IMPACT:
🏭🏭 Burning of these fossil fuels release toxic fumes in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming, smog, chronic health problems, depletion of limited natural sources and destruction of our ecosystems.
Oil spills, which often occur during the transport of fossil fuels, wreak havoc on underwater species and our oceans! 😟☹️
💡🔌 We can reduce the air pollution by Saving Energy and following the below steps.
As citizens:
- Consume less power
- Switch off the lights, AC, computers etc. when not required
- Hang dry clothes instead of machine dry
- Use energy saving electrical appliances
Government, Industries and private individuals must also take the environmental initiative of choosing Renewable Sources of Energy like Geothermal, Hydro/Tidal, Wind & Solar! Here are some actions that the government can take to reduce air pollution:
- Improve air quality monitoring and reporting infrastructure
- Make strict rules for industries and factories to install filters and smoke monitoring equipments.
- Have strict checks and supervision on their air quality.
- Tighten emission standards of coal-fired power plants and monitor its obedience
Source: https://ekonomi.bisnis.com/read/20180304/44/745790/pembangkit-listrik-bauran-batu-bara-57This graphic shows the air quality in Jakarta through the full month of July 📆📊
The AQI (air quality index) is used worldwide by government agencies to measure the severity of air pollution. July levels in Jakarta show a very high amount of PM2.5, which pose the greatest risk to human health as they are small enough to be inhaled and directly enter our bloodstreams.
As the graphic shows, the air we are breathing is not safe and can increase respiratory problems, heart problems, and other serious health issues. This is not only an environmental matter, but also a public health emergency. It is estimated that 211,916 people die annually in Indonesia due to air pollution.
We not only ENCOURAGE the citizens to BE A PART OF SOLUTION but also ASK the Government of Jakarta and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to accept the facts and reality of poor air quality in Jakarta and TAKE CONCRETE ACTIONS towards this.
TOGETHER WE CAN! 💪🌎💚
💪🌎💚As you can see from the daily reading, the air quality is still unhealthy and unsafe for all of us living in Jakarta. You and I might also be contributing to this pollution by not choosing the right means of transportation as much as possible.
Although there are many Public Transportation systems in Jakarta now like the MRT, LRT, BRT buses, commuter trains and the Odd-Even Policy, still very few people are using it. And that is why we are NOT able to see much difference!
🤜🤛🤝So let's make a conscious attempt to use the public transport as much as possible.
😎💪BE A CHANGE AGENT NOW! Small Step. Big Impact!
Langkah kecil, besar dampaknya!Do you know that less than 95,000 people use MRT in Jakarta per day? And that the public bus system carries just 400,000 people a day? Meanwhile, almost 10 million private vehicles hit the road every day! 🚗🚙💨
Using public transport is a way to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion in Jakarta. For those who would like to be a change agent and start using public transport in a daily basis but are still not familiar with the new Integrated Transportation System, you can check the MRT (green) and LRT (brown) map added in our post.

For those who are not familiar with the term AQI, it is an index used by AirVisual to measure the severity of pollution in a city. This index measures 6 main pollutants namely PM2.5, PM10, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone at ground level. The six main vessels are counted as one AQI number. The AQI range is 0-500, the higher the AQI value, the higher the air pollution level. 183 AQI and 194 AQI are considered unhealthy for the general public breathing the air and can increase adverse effects and aggravation to the heart and lungs of the population 😷☠️
📷 credits: @chancil.chan (28 July) & Ester Fonseca (29 July)The poor air quality in Jakarta is the result of a perfect storm of pollutants: numerous nearby coal-fired power plants, transport emissions, manufacturing, household emissions, construction, road dust, and open waste burning. We are all committed to contribute to reducing air pollution, but we also need all the efforts from our government to urgently create and implement a strategy and action plan on air pollution control. That’s why we would like to encourage the honorable Governor of Jakarta to tighten emission standards of coal-fired power plants (CFFPs). This is one major step that only the government can take, while we citizens also do our part in other ways.
📷 credits: Alfred SitorusAccording to the World Health Organization, air pollution is not only danger to human health, but pollutants (such as carbon dioxide, ground level ozone, sulphur dioxide) are also drivers of climate change. We need action now! ✊🏽
What action are you going to start taking today to help reduce air pollution?
We all breathe the same air and are all responsible for doing our part to keep it clean. If you don’t know where to start, there are some actions that you can take today:
🚌 Use public transport or practice carpooling. Bike or walk whenever possible
🚗 Driving the car? Turn off the engine when stationary (idling)
💡 Save energy at home, at work, at school, everywhere. Turn off the lights and electronics when not in use
🐮 Reduce your consumption of meat and dairy to help cut methane emissions. Start with one meal a week
🚫🔥 Stop burning household waste
🌱 Start composting organic food items. It can be done in your garden or apartment using compost bins
♻️ Reuse and recycle non-organic waste. To find organizations that can pick recyclable waste near you, check our website. The link is in the bio
🌳 Plant trees!
Pick at least one of them and stay committed to it. Every little bit counts!
🚫🔥 Berhenti mengurangi pembakaran sampah rumah tangga
🌳 Tanam pohon sebanyak mungkin!
💪A picture is worth a thousand words. The sky in Jakarta v. the sky in Manokwari just a few days ago. Is this how the future of Jakarta’s children will be forever?

It could be funny if the topic of air pollution wasn’t so serious. An estimated 8 million people globally die every year of disease related to air pollution. Approx. 4.3 million of these deaths are due to household air pollution, and 3.7 million deaths are due to outdoor pollution. The number of estimated deaths in Indonesia is 211.916 annually. We need stricter and up-to-date regulation about air pollution. To the President of Indonesia, Mr. Jokowi, we implore you to revise the Governmental Regulation 41/1999 about Air Pollution Control, which is outdated and not as rigid as the World Health Organization’s standard.
📷 credits: @conscientiouslylivingHow many times have you looked out of your window and seen this view? Even though Jakarta has local regulation 2/2005, which makes trash burning illegal, this photo shows a sad and all-too-common every day reality. People resort to this mode of disposal as it is either the fastest way to get rid of waste or they are unable to access proper waste management services. The effect of their actions is negatively impacting the environment and the health of millions of Jakartans ❌ Open waste burning must stopped ❌ We need to act and we need a proper plan that reinforces the law and provides access to communities without proper waste management services. To the honorable Governor of Jakarta, we implore you to enforce and monitor the trash burning ban under the local regulation 2/2005.

The greatest contributors for air pollution in Jakarta are industry and energy (e.g. coal-fired power plants), transportation, waste management (e.g. gas emissions from landfills and burning of waste). If you want to live in a city where you can breathe healthy and clean air, join us and let’s be part of the solution together! We challenge you this week to use public transport or practice carpooling. Whenever possible, walk or bike, but be mindful of the air quality and wear your mask outside!
🚌🚗🚲🚶🏽♀️🚶🏾♂️Where is our Jakarta? The air quality is not improving. It is hard to see, it is hard to breath 😷 According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF), the main cause of Jakarta’s air pollution has been the emissions from millions of motor vehicles driving every day around the city. For this reason, we want to recommend the MOEF to provide guidance for the Province of Jakarta in relation to obedience to emission standards of vehicles. We can #BeatAirPollution if we all work together.
Dimana Jakarta kita? It is Friday! And we want to know what action you took today to help reducing air pollution. If you don’t know where to start, go check our last two posts to find out how you can contribute. For today’s post we want to encourage the honorable Governor of DKI Jakarta to monitor obedience to emission standards of immovable emission sources, such as industries, CFFPs, trash burning ban, and others. It is time to act!
Mari bertindak! How’s the air today, Jakarta? Yesterday’s view from above wasn’t the best. But did you know, that it is the particles you can't see that pose the greatest risk to human health? PM2.5 particles are almost 70 times smaller than a human hair, and can enter the bloodstream through your lungs. Here is another action that you can take today to help reducing air pollution:
🚫🔥 Stop burning household waste
If you haven’t checked the first two steps, go check our previous post. We all can help to #BeatAirPollution.
🚫🔥 Jangan membakar sampah rumah tangga

Kamu ikut? 💪Wouldn’t it be nice to have clear and clean skies everyday? Today is not one of these days. It seems like pollution masks are much more common in Jakarta than clear skies these days 😷
